Online Doula Workshop: Understanding Hypnosis in Birth

Thursday, May 2, 2024
10:00 AM 1:00 PM

Popularized in the last few decades by Hypnobirthing and HypnoBabies, hypnosis during birth has long been a tool used by birth attendants to support laboring parents.
In this 3 hour, online workshop, doulas and other birth attendants will learn the history and physiology of hypnosis as well as how to use basic hypnosis techniques to support clients during pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. By employing relaxation, visualization, and suggestion, you can help clients manage pain, reduce anxiety, and foster a positive birthing experience. Hypnosis can enhance coping mechanisms, promote fewer medical interventions in childbirth, and empower clients to navigate childbirth with greater ease and confidence.

You will walk away knowing:

1. The physiology of hypnosis and how to take advantage of hypnotic states we are in and out of everyday to prepare for birth.
2. How hypnosis interacts with the physiology of labor to improve birth experiences for birthing people.
3. Brainwaves and how the hypnotic state interacts with and can create healthy flexibility within the nervous system.
4. The history of birth hypnosis in the last century and the trademarking of hypnosis techniques for birth with popular hypnosis based childbirth education classes in the U.S.
5. How the hypnotic state in birth has been used by birth attendants across cultures - with written evidence dating back to the 14th century.
6. What hypnosis is and isn’t - differences/definitions between hypnosis, guided visualization, meditation, hypnotherapy and other popular terms.
7. How doulas, midwives and other perinatal professionals can explain different options and resources to clients to use hypnosis during pregnancy, birth and postpartum.
8. Exercises to guide clients into the hypnotic state and how to use this state to decrease pain and discomfort during labor.
9. How to use hypnosis on yourself as a birth attendant to cope with long births, challenging births and absorbing vicarious trauma from clients.

*Show up live to ask questions and receive a freebie hypnosis handout for clients.
Recording will be made available.
